The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel

Some hotels have a past. This one has a legacy.

Built in 1927 by Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, and Louis B. Mayer, The Hollywood Roosevelt has anchored the boulevard ever since. It hosted the first Academy Awards. Marilyn Monroe called it home. David Hockney painted the bottom of its pool. Nearly a century later, it remains all of those things, and one of the most iconic places to stay in Los Angeles.

Since 1927

Nearly a century on the boulevard

1927
The tallest building on Hollywood Boulevard opens its doors.

Financed by Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, Louis B. Mayer, and Sid Grauman, The Hollywood Roosevelt opens as a 300-room Spanish Colonial Revival hotel. At twelve stories, it towers over the boulevard and becomes the social headquarters of the movie business overnight.

1929
The first Academy Awards.

On May 16, 1929, 270 guests gather in the Blossom Ballroom for a private dinner. The ceremony lasts fifteen minutes. Wings wins Best Picture. Douglas Fairbanks hands out the statuettes. Tickets cost $5. It will take decades before anyone calls it the Oscars, but the Roosevelt will always be where it started.

1953
Marilyn Monroe moves in.

A young Marilyn Monroe checks into a poolside cabana suite and stays for two years. She models for her first print ad by the Tropicana Pool. Her full-length mirror still hangs in the hotel's lower level, and staff say she hasn't entirely left.

1988
David Hockney paints the pool.

British artist David Hockney is commissioned to paint the bottom of the Tropicana Pool. The result — a vivid, undulating composition of blues and whites — becomes one of the most photographed pools in Los Angeles and one of Hockney's most recognizable works outside a gallery.

Today
A revival, not a renovation.

Under ownership since 1995, the Roosevelt has undergone extensive renovations and continued investment. New venues — Shirley, The Spare Room, The Library Bar — opened alongside the restored lobby, Cinegrill theater, and pool. The goal was never to erase history, but to make it worth checking into again.
